The intrigue of medicine. It peaks our interest. Captures our attention. A medical scene done well emotionally involves viewers and readers making them feel as if they were actually present in the operating room. Or at the scene of an accident. But today's readers and audiences are more sophisticated than ever. If medical scenes are to be accepted by the audience, they must be technically correct.
Every word counts. Every movement counts. Sometimes even the slightest medical oversight can affect the authenticity of the scene. Knowing when and where to take dramatic license can be the most critical aspect of designing a scene or story. Properly done, the emotion and drama of an underlying storyline can be evoked without inadvertently communicating false medical information.
